It took wits for The Weitz Company to become a top US general building contractor.
Founded in 1855 by carpenter Charles H. Weitz, the company was run by the Weitz
family for four generations before becoming employee-owned. It provides general
contracting, construction management, and design/build services, constructing
everything from office buildings, industrial plants, senior communities, and
schools to hotels, golf courses, supermarkets, and malls. Weitz entered the homebuilding
market in 2001 with its purchase of Colorado-based Norris Associates,
which constructs multimillion-dollar homes in well-heeled resort areas. Weitz
builds supermarkets and warehouse/distribution centers through its Hy-Vee Weitz
